They were a mind blowing few days, even from 8329 miles away!

It may seem weird to say this (I think my weirdness is pretty much acknowledged already, so I’ll say it anyway), but even just monitoring the hashtag #Mozcon from the other side of the world, there were so many moments that touched me during that few days.

Some were things that stopped me in my tracks and then moved me to laughter, like this “Sitting in a room listening to @avinash is so full of awesome it’s like Jesus just rode into the room riding a T-Rex #mozcon ” from @GregGifford.

Some made me envious, like checking the Mozcon photo albums on Facebook and seeing all those lucky people posing for photos with the mighty Roger Mozbot – for whom I had already developed a massive crush!

Whether walking through the foyer, exposing his softer side (is that Greg Gifford again?!) or offering solace from the ravages of Robot kisses (aawww, that Gianluca is so sweet), the photo shoots with Roger were hard to take from all the way over here . I hope Rudy Lopez will be on hand to shoot Mozcon 2012 as well.

Some taught me simple lessons that I have applied a thousand times since to help my clients, like this tweet by John Doherty from David Mihm’s presentation on Local Search.

Some had me glued to Twitter waiting for an outcome, like the nail biting head-to-head between Will Critchlow & Rand Fishkin.

Some literally moved me to tears, like the moment I discovered exactly why the awesome Jen Sable Lopez was not at Mozcon.

It was right around the moment when John Doherty temporarily went missing from Twitter for crossing the rapid fire tweet threshold during a particularly outstanding session, that I decided I needed to be at Mozcon 2012. Exactly how to find around $6K to make it happen in peak season was a complete mystery at that point (and is still only about half taken care of), but I made a promise to myself that the long planned 2012 visit to the USA will happen in July.

So I’ve literally been counting the days for a very long time and when the news broke at SEOmoz a month or so ago that this year’s dates are now set in concrete, things suddenly got real. So real, I decided it was time to let everyone know how little time there is to get ready for the event… but how to do that?

Yes, that’s it! We need a Mozcon Countdown Clock!

So here it is. If you’re planning to be at Mozcon (even if you’re not), feel free to grab the code below and add the counter to your site. To get your tickets to Mozcon, just click Register at the top of the image or go straight to the signup page at SEOmoz.

Get the code:

If you’re already a part of the SEOmoz community, I’m really hoping you’ll make it to Seattle for Mozcon too.

I have a plan or two for making my own little mark on the 2012 event and there are a couple of IOU’s I’m due to take care of at the Bar. I’ll also be on the lookout for those of you that I catch up with regularly on Twitter, in the Blogs or Q&A. If you’re wondering how best to find me amongst the hundreds of people there, just follow the smell of freshly baked cookies

I have to agree with Mike King when he says that Mozcon 2011 changed things for him in a lot of ways – it did for me too. Perhaps for me the changes were not as tangible, but still they have had a huge effect on my life since, and set me on this unwavering course for the next big adventure in my life…only 165 days to go!

I’ll see you in Seattle for Mozcon 2012!

-Sha

Post Script: If you’ve read this far and you don’t really know anything about SEOmoz, you might like to visit their site and check out their SEO Software and the outstanding inbound marketing community they have built there.

Online Reviews Killing Your Business?

Even Offline Businesses Need Online Reviews

If you are trying to compete in the local search space and aren’t paying attention to online reviews, then you’re not even close to being in the game!

Whatever your product or service, the flow-on effect of every customer experience has the potential to make or break your business! In days gone by, an unhappy customer here or there might have been easy to ignore. After all, they actually had to come in contact with each other to tell someone that your business sucks, right? Right, almost.

Well times have changed, the internet is here and telling the whole world that you suck is as easy as typing and clicking! Online reviews are now a huge influence for potential customers and for search engines.

So you’re thinking “well I’m OK, I have no reviews, so everybody knows my business doesn’t suck, right?” Wrong. You actually need those good reviews just as desperately as you need to avoid the bad ones!

Even if you don’t sell things on your website, (even if you don’t have a website!) people can and will write reviews about your business online. With more and more offline purchases being driven by online research, you need to be paying attention to attracting and managing customer reviews!

Doing the Math on Customer Reviews

As a business owner, there’s one thing you want to see before you make a decision what to do for your business – the Math. So, to get a feel for the numbers and see what online reviews mean for your business, take a look at the Infographic below and be sure to share it with your business partners and staff…

Don’t steal my images!

So you’ve built a totally kickass, rock hard website. You poured hours and hours of work into it. You went out and hired a professional photographer to take some cool pics of your stuff. Life is good, the website starts to get traffic and WHAMMO! A picture thief sees your site and suddenly, your images get pinched. Not only do they get pinched, but even worse they get hot linked!

So what is the problem exactly? Well on the internet any images that you put on your website are actually downloaded to the user’s browser cache before they can even see them. So, downloading images from websites is inherent in how websites work. This means you really can’t stop someone from pinching or downloading your images. What is even worse, is when you pay money out of your own pocket for your website and the bandwidth required to run it and someone else makes a webpage and hotlinks your image from your website to theirs. So then your website becomes a file server for someone else’s site!

I will explain techniques to fight both of these issues.

FIRST TIP: Don’t stress too much over this, the world is full of little problems and this one is no biggie! In fact, it’s possible to turn those stolen images into an advantage for your website.

Let me show you how:

Problem 1: THE HOT LINKER

Someone has embedded your images on their site. This is an easy problem to fix, but you need to know how to create and edit a .htaccess file.

# Show Ad image on remote linking
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteRule \.(png|gif|jpe?g)$ http://www.yoursite.com/images/your_ad_here.jpg [NC,L]

Now instead of seeing pretty flowers people will see an Ad for your website!

–>

Unexpected Bonus: Make sure the banner you use is an ad for your site and you can get some nice traffic flowing from it. Actually, the harder the picture thief tries to benefit from your work, the more traffic will potentially flow back to you!

Problem 2: DOWNLOADING AND STEALING

So someone downloaded your images and now they are using them without your permission. What you really need to do is watermark them! If you only have one or two files there are a lot of free websites out there that will watermark for you but if you want to do it for yourself take a look at this solution. First you need to add some code to your .htaccess file

# Hide and Watermark your images
#
# This says take your http://yoursite.com/products/this-shirt-is-blue-m-123454.jpg and
# watermark it with images/watermark.gif and the actual image inventory/123454.jpg
#
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^wimages/(.*)$ watermark.php?file=images/$1 [L]

This code says take your images and use a watermark script to mark them up.

Image

+

Watermark

=

watermark.php?file=images/arrangement.jpg

or

Image

+

Watermark

=

/wimages/arrangement.jpg

Nice Bonus: If you make sure that your transparent watermark image includes your domain name, every image on your site is reinforcing your brand in the user’s mind and repetition is awesome in marketing!

So there you go, two very good ways of making sure your photo content stays with you!

Look forward to your comments.

Web Design Company Fail #1

The first in a series for inexperienced Web design companies and clients
There are times when a prospective client is looking for more than just a quote for building a website. When the conversation starts with “I need to know if you can help me…” its a sure bet that there is a web designer out there somewhere who just got fired, and another sure bet, that the reason is one of five common Web design company Fails!

Today we’re starting a series of short posts about the mistakes that web designers (and web design companies) can make with a client’s web site. The uncomfortable truth is that most of these mistakes are excruciatingly simple and more often occur through pure oversight than ignorance. This in itself should make it easy to avoid them happening to you.

Web Design Company Fail #1 – Deleting the old site when asked to build a new one

When a client asks you to build them a better web site, you get a little rush. Whether you’ve hooked up hundreds of new clients in the past, or are just getting started on your web design business, its always nice to be chosen for the job. Web designers should enjoy that feeling, but never let it convince them that the new site they build is the center of the universe!

The fact is, any existing site will have some pages that are already indexed in search engines. Whether there are hundreds or just a few, you should never delete them from their current location without doing three critical things:

1) create a complete back-up of the existing site;
2) analyze and categorize the content of each page and;
3) create a 301 (permanent) redirect to a relevant page on the new site for each.

Why keep a back-up of files that will not be seen on the new site?

This should be fairly obvious. The dictionary definition of the word delete is “Remove or obliterate”. To put it plainly, once its gone, its gone! Well of course you knew that, but why should it matter? Obviously a back-up will allow you to recover any previous text and other page elements at any time in the future. While the need for this may seem unlikely, remember that clients can (and do) change their mind about the content they want on their site. After all, they are the site owner and have the right to do so. If you build websites, you don’t ever want to be in the position of explaining to your client that you deleted the content they really want to put back into the site. If you are a site owner working toward launching a brand new site, you should check with your designer that all of the old content can be retrieved if you need it.

Why do I need to analyze and categorize the content of pages that will not be seen in future?

You should always assume that every existing page has been linked to. Every external link to a website is of course, a potential source of visitors or “traffic”. Maintaining these traffic sources is critical when launching the new web site.

There are three obvious sources of external links:
1) Search Engines and Directories. If a page has been “indexed” by a search engine or added to a directory, a link has been created.
2) Other websites. Other webmasters may have created links from their site to any page.
3) Bookmarks or Favorites. Any previous website visitor may have created a link to a page by saving the location in a web browser.

The visitors who follow existing links to a site are expecting to find content that is related to the link that they clicked. If the page that they land on doesn’t seem relevant, they are unlikely to continue browsing the site. So, pages that will no longer exist in the new site must be permanently redirected to the new page which contains the most relevant information.

If you are designing the new website, it is your job to know what was contained on the pages you will remove, and to know which new pages match them best for content.

If there are a lot of pages to be removed from a site, clients should expect their quote to include the cost of analyzing and redirecting each one.

Why not just redirect everything to the home page?

Don't prove to your new client that their web design Messiah has feet of clay!

Unfortunately, this is easy, quick and occurs way too often! Web designers who use the “catch-all” approach will likely have to deal with a disappointed client. A drop in the number of contacts or conversions is likely if visitors don’t find relevant content when they arrive on the site. The last thing a web designer wants is to disappoint an enthusiastic new client. The last thing a client wants is to realize that potential customers have slipped through their fingers! As with most things in life, the quickest and easiest method is not the best.

If you pay careful attention to all of these potential problems you can achieve a painless and successful transition from the old site to the new. If you are the project manager, keep a simple checklist to ensure that no-one in your company drops the ball. Clients should ask a few questions of the person responsible for the project. Don’t leave it ’til launch day. It is always a hundred times easier to prevent a problem than to clean up the mess afterwards!

Put simply, whether you are a website designer or a client, don’t be caught by Web Design Company Fail #1!

How to use Twitter for your Business

Everybody’s talking about Twitter.

Unfortunately, there is just as much bad information out there as good. Customers often ask “can you tell me how to use Twitter for my business?” so, assuming that you are asking the question because you want to try doing it yourself, let’s start with the basics.

Obviously you can use Twitter to help alert the broader public to things that are happening in your business, but the key to getting the most out of social media is not to try to use it as an advertising billboard, but rather to share information and opinions with those who might be interested in what you have to say.

Basically, the more interesting things you have to say, the more people will want to “follow” you. When you say things that they think are worth sharing with their own followers they can “retweet” your messages. This “chain-linked” and “open to the world” method of communication allows your message to spread far and wide very quickly.

People also have the option to “follow” particular subjects by using hashtags (#). If you use a hashtag in a tweet, then it will also appear in an aggregated stream of messages about that subject, making it visible to many more people than just your own followers. To ensure that a particular person sees your tweet, you need to include their Twitter handle (@twittername). Each tweet has a limit of 140 characters, so it can be a challenge to create a message that is useful while including recipients and hashtags, but it gets easier over time. TIP: Choose a Twitter handle that is short, but easy to remember

The key to using Twitter to drive traffic to your website is to achieve a balance between social interaction, sharing information about your business (with links where possible) and identifying and using twitter streams (hashtags) that people are watching and will help to 1) spread the word and 2) make connections with people who are important and might help to disseminate the message.

Sometimes it is more important to make a social connection with an important person than to put a one-off message in front of general users on a specific business issue.

Many people think that the most important thing is how many “followers” you have. This is not actually true…”who is following” is much more important than “how many are following”. For example, in my own personal Twitter stream @ShahMenz my relatively small 31 followers include some very highly respected people in my field of SEO and as a result – an extended twitter stream of some 530,000 people. So, if I say something that is worth retweeting, there is a potential for a lot of people to see it.

Two of the people following me are amongst the most highly respected people in the world of SEO and the relationship I have with them is not just business, but built on shared social interaction on a range of topics. The fact that these people have chosen to follow me says to other Twitter users that they think I am worth listening to…building this kind of trust is invaluable. The added bonus for me (and I hope for them) is that I actually enjoy seeing what they tweet about the things that are happening in their lives; sharing a joke; a photo of the kids etc. While that all sounds very un-business like, it also means that I have the ear of those people and potentially a half a million others if I say something that might be of broader interest.

What should I tweet about?

This is the real challenge … don’t be tempted to spew out endless self promotion or business advertising! Keep it real and interesting. Think about the cool or fascinating things that you do for your customers and tweet about them. The way you view what you do, the extra effort you make for your customers, the reasons you develop a new service … all of these things say something to the world about you and your business.

Remember that your business works because you do things that people need and value. Simply sharing these things can do a lot to promote your services without ever having to turn on the hard sell.

Here’s an example – We have a client that happens to own a plumbing company in Miami. While talking with them on the phone recently they asked if I could wait a couple of minutes, then returned to explain that a client of theirs had come into the office to bring them coffee and donuts! Yes, this lady was so grateful for the service she received from their plumbing staff that she went out of her way to deliver coffee and donuts to their office! As a potential client there really isn’t much more I need to know about the company is there?

So, how could this company use Twitter to help promote their business? How about a quick tweet that goes something like this:

What a great #surprise! Mrs C just arrived in our #MiamiBeach office with coffee and donuts to say thank you! Wow!!

So, let’s take a look at what we achieved in 118 characters -

- We thanked Mrs C for being an awesome customer and told the world that we appreciate her as much as she appreciates us
- Evoked a feeling of shared enjoyment, nurturing and maybe even a smile for the reader
- Told the world where we are located and that we serve clients in or near Miami Beach
- Put our business into two twitter streams, one of which is tied to our business location and of interest to local clients
- Conveyed a happy, open and interesting persona for staff in the business.

Yes, all of that in 118 characters and for no cost other than the time that it took to create the message and type it.

If you can include a relevant link to a page on your website, that’s a great backlink, BUT make sure it is relevant. TIP: You should also use a good URL shortening service to save characters, but that is a whole other blog post!

Of course, there is a lot more to it than this, but if you want to add Twitter to your in-house marketing toolkit, this should give you a place to start.

If you need a more intensive campaign, or don’t have the time or inclination to do it yourself, there are many companies that will offer to set up and run campaigns for you. As always, think carefully, ask questions and shop around. Any agency or consultant offering these services should be happy to answer your questions. I always feel better when my clients want to know things – a curious client is an interested client and those are the ones I like best!

Happy Tweeting!

I Need a Website

If you’re thinking “I need a website!” it’s likely your next thought will be “but how much will it cost?”

The truth of the matter is that web site development is one area where the old adage “you get what you pay for” has largely held true. Whilst there are hundreds of low cost Do-it-yourself website builders out there (some are even free), many site owners find themselves with an unattractive or broken site, little or no traffic, and still no effective web presence for their business.

I need a website for my business, but Do-it-yourself website builders aren’t for me

Sound familiar? I honestly hope not, but the chances are if you’ve tried one of these build-it-yourself services, then you are likely to have come away dissatisfied for one reason or another. In fact, 10% of the new client enquiries at BF Design Studio in the past year have come from people have tried a do-it-yourself-website that didn’t work for them! Yes, it was cheap, maybe even free, but some found it impossible to even get a working site, others hated the design limitations, even those who had successfully built a site they liked were unhappy that it brought no visitors to their online business. So, if you started out this way, you’ve probably adjusted your thinking slightly – progressing from “I need a website” to “I need a custom-built website” and of course, the next thing on your mind will be “how much does a custom-built website cost?”

The great news is that you can have a small, simple website built for your business, without breaking the bank.

At BF Design Studio, we are very excited about the development of our newest website package! Developed especially to help small businesses get online quickly and easily, your custom-built website, includes Search Engine Optimization (SEO) at an affordable $499. We’ve designed this new package specifically to help solve your web site development problems. So, if you are one of those small business owners who is thinking “I need a website”, you can put your business online for as little as $499.

Social media marketing is an essential tool for any business. Sites such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn are among the most popular sites regularly visited on the internet and can generate large numbers of visitors and new sales leads.

Many businesses are already utilizing social media marketing as part of their ongoing business strategy, but a large percentage of these are not aware of the essentials required to fully maximize social media to its full potential.

Here are 5 important criteria that need to be addressed in order to run a successful social media campaign.

1. Search Engine Rank Awareness

Social media profiles now make regular appearances in search engine listings. The major search engines are placing greater importance on these profiles as they tend to possess regularly updated topical content and provide quality information that search engine users are looking for.

Any social media profile should be created with search engine placement in mind. Ensure that relevant keywords are placed in titles, and content, and that any links use keywords (located within the anchor text). Brand names should be clearly visible to augment the likelihood of search engines displaying a social media profile for brand-related search queries.

Having a social media profile appear in SERP listings will build traffic to that profile and could subsequently lead to additional traffic to the main business website via that profile.

2. Additional Site Traffic from Social Media Posts

Search engines now index and display individual social media posts in their search results. The search engines consider these posts topical, relevant and useful to their users – 3 of the main criteria search engines look for when ranking a page (or submission).

Posting quality submissions on social media sites and including links back to a main website, or webpage, within these posts can seriously incréase website traffic – if the posts are indexed and displayed in search engine listings.

Social media bookmarking sites such as Digg, StumbleUpon and Slashdot have been known to drive thousands of visitors to websites. Submit blog posts – and website content – to these sites and there is a good chance that these submissions will capture the interest of readers and result in increased website traffic.

3. Use Social Media for SEO-Based Links

Links back to a main website can be placed in most of the social media profiles. These are useful links from high authority websites and good quality backlinks influence where a website is ranked within a search engine.

Many social media bookmarking sites now apply the NOFOLLOW attribute to links due to abuse, but there are still some major platforms that continue to use the DOFOLLOW attribute. At the time of writing, these social bookmarking sites still allow DOFOLLOW links:

• FriendFeed
• Furl
• Slashdot
• Digg
• Mixx

Even if a bookmarking site applies the NOFOLLOW attribute, links within posts can still pay dividends. Regardless of their SEO-based backlink power, people will still follow these links back to a main site and this means increased traffic and greater site visibility.

4. Target Specific Markets

The simplicity of creating a social media profile allows for the creation of multiple campaigns. A good business strategy should run a main social media profile and then look to create smaller, laser-targeted profiles that cater for very specific niche markets related to the main business interest.

If a business sells a wide variety of products, it should look to create individual profiles that target the different categories of products sold. This tactic allows the business to concentrate on each subset of product, as well as the potential customers searching for these specific products, or type of products. By breaking down social media campaigns, a business can provide relevant, topical information that caters for very specific individuals.

Where other businesses try to capture all potential buyers in one huge net and can only provide generic information to a wide scope of readers about the entire range of their products – the clever business, with their niche market profiles, will reach out to each subset and be able to provide them exactly what they are searching for.

5. Improved Brand Recognition

Many businesses fail to realize the importance of social media profiles when it comes to increasing brand recognition. These social media platforms have millions of daily visitors and provide an unequalled resource for rapidly promoting a brand, or product.

Having a main website ranked high in a search engine for that particular brand name is great – as long as enough people are performing search queries using that specific brand-name keyword. Social media provide an easier solution for promoting brand recognition and this factor should be forefront in any social media strategy.

Make sure the brand is clearly visible in a profile – include it in the profile title and bio; promote the brand discreetly in sporadic posts and if there is a brand-related business logo, this should be placed on the main profile page.

It has been suggested that a person needs to see, or hear, a brand name seven times before they consider becoming a customer. Social media offers a business the best solution for reaching the largest potential audience.

By utilizing social media marketing and concentrating on these 5 important criteria, any business can potentially expand website traffic, sales leads and easily reach targeted customer bases. Social media marketing is starting to become very competitive, but not everybody has learned to optimize their campaigns and fully utilize the power of social media marketing. The business that learns to adapt its strategies and play to the strengths of social media is the one that jumps ahead of the competition.

This post was originally in YOUmoz, and was promoted to the main blog because it provides great value and interest to our community. The author’s views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of SEOmoz, Inc.

There’s no shortage of posts and tutorials built around setting up a monitoring dashboard. Everyone has a favorite. Mine is from Marty Wientraub from Aim Clear (see How to Build a Reputation Monitoring Dashboard). There are new services that spring up every few months about monitoring like Scout Labs and Trackur, a lot of which are very good products. However in some cases those products are like driving a Ferrari to the supermarket to pick up a quart of milk: it’s just overkill and too much power for the job. Sometimes you just need a quick, easy solution for the task at hand. Here’s how I do it.

If you’re an account manager for a large firm, or “the guy” in a one man operation, you should always be on the lookout for tools that you can use to automate the low level and receptive work. Google Alerts is one of those tools. There are some smart ways you can get Google Alerts to work for you.

When you set up Google Alerts, if you choose the “email” delivery option and choose “once a day,” you should know that the first alert will come about 24 hours later. It will repeat every day at about the same time. So if you want your alerts to come at 9 am every morning, set them up just before 9 am and you’re all set. The one problem with this is that, if you adjust an alert, the time resets to the last time you adjusted it. It would be nice if Google gave us the ability to specify a delivery time, but that’s not the case. If you choose “as it happens,” you’ll get email alerts at random times during the day. There are some cases where you want this, and we’ll get into that below, but in most cases I recommend once per day.

Google Alerts

The second thing you need to know is that Google recently changed the filtering methodology in an attempt to show/send fewer alerts. When you set up an alert, you can specify the maximum number of results, either 20 or 50. This setting also seems to correspond to how sensitive the filter is. Set it to 50 and you’ll get deeper, less trusted sites showing up; set it to 20 and the results will show only the more trusted results. The truth is you need both (again, we’ll get into that below). It would be nice if Google gave us the option to choose trusted/all results independent of the number, but that’s not the case.

Lastly I recommend setting up an alias email address specifically for Google Alerts. When you go on vacation or will be out of the office for a few days, you don’t want the emails piling up in your inbox. You might want them to forward to someone else or temporarily get deleted. In a perfect world you would have two aliases: one for the priority alerts, another for the standard ones. Again, more on that below.

Ok let’s get down to business. The following tactic is built upon one that was first talked about by Patrick Aloft a few years ago (see How to Use Google Alerts to Find Out if Your Site Gets Hacked). What we are trying to do is trap for certain conditions that we need to know about. I divide my alerts into two blocks: things I need to know about as soon as possible and things that I need to know about that aren’t time sensitive. These are the three Google Alerts I set up for every site I run and every client site I work on.

viagra OR cialis OR levitra OR Phentermine OR Xanax site:wolf-howl.com

poker OR casino OR hold-em OR holdem site:wolf-howl.com

nude OR naked OR sex OR porn site:wolf-howl.com

When I set up these alerts I want to know ASAP when it happens, because it means someone has hacked the server, or some content was published or approved that probably shouldn’t have been. I also want all the results, whether trusted or not. I can deal with a few false positives, but not getting an alert I wanted would be bad. Recently, Rand linked to a post by Richard Baxter showing that spam keywords that were nofollowed in the comment section had an effect on rankings, so you want to watch out for this stuff. I split/grouped the terms to make it easy to maintain. You could use one big long query joined with “OR” statements, but you run the risk of things “breaking” much more easily. As a result, I like to keep it manageable and under 4 or 5 terms.

The next set of terms I set up only come once a day and don’t have to be as extensive, so I limit it to 20 results. Here are the terms I use:

wolf-howl.com {site:facebook.com OR site:digg.com OR site:delicious.com OR site:stumbleupon.com OR site:mixx.com OR site:reddit.com}

site: wolf-howl.com

wolf-howl.com site:twitter.com

Depending on the total number of alerts you’re getting, you can bulk them all together. Adjusting the setup times or getting the alerts in batches throughout the day is up to you.

One last tip. In addition to using the “OR” phrase as in the examples above, you can also use negative phrases. Here’s an example of one that that I use for a vanity search for my name:

“michael gray” -dj -uk -football -police

There is a famous DJ who share my name and -dj eliminates most of his results. There is a UK soccer/football player who shares my name as well. Since I have a fairly common name it’s becoming more frequent that Google comes across arrest records from newspapers with people who share my name; the “-police” takes care of most of that. The way I figure, if I did get arrested, hopefully I’d know about it before Google does.

But Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg seemed to confirm it while literally sweating out an onstage interview Wednesday at the Wall Street Journal’s eighth annual D: All Things Digital tech conference.

According to the live blog of the D:8 event by the Journal’s John Paczkowski, Zuckerberg talked about the beginnings of the social network, which officially lists itself at more than 400 million active users.

“We went from building a service in a dorm room to running a service that 500 million people use,” Paczkowski quoted Zuckerberg, although the blog has a disclaimer that it was not intended to be a word-for-word transcript of the event.

Another indication of the milestone came earlier in the day when Zuckerberg said Bret Taylor had been promoted to the position of chief technology officer. Taylor co-founded FriendFeed, which Facebook bought last year.

As the site AllFacebook.com noted, Zuckerberg’s e-mail to employees announcing the promotion said that Facebook’s “News Feed is the home page for more than 250 million people every day, and our team has fewer than 15 engineers.”

So going by Zuckerberg’s e-mail, and using Facebook’s stat that 50 percent of its active users log “on any given day,” that would also signify the Palo Alto firm has reached the half-billion mark.

The growth in membership shows that attempts by critics of Facebook’s privacy policies to get members to delete their accounts has had almost no effect.

But Zuckerberg was sweating so much while being grilled by columnists Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher that he had to remove his trademark black hoodie.

If you want to be a professional web designer in Miami then this article is a definitive read.

The preparation of an SEO Site Audit is something that every SEO, whether in-house, agency-side, or independent consultant, has done. They range from a brief assessment of an hour or two followed by a quick email to a mammoth document of more than 50 pages that can take a month or more to complete. A junior SEO might charge a few hundred dollars for a quick assessment and a well known consultancy can charge in the neighborhood of $40K for a report on the more complete end of the scale. For a process that gets that much time and money allocated it’s way, I’m amazed at the lack of chatter on industry blogs. I suppose what elements we review and how we go about the process are among the things that SEOs hold close to their chest.

In true SEOmoz spirit, I’m cracking open the black box and sharing what I’ve learned along the way. This is the first post of many that you will see from me over the coming months on the topic of optimizing your SEO reviews. Today, I’ll cover a few of the most significant elements that I’ve come up with over the years to include in all large SEO reviews.

1. SEO Scorecard

I’m starting with the single most important element of the SEO Audits I create. The idea was hammered out with the guidance of an executive at my old in-house gig. Woody wanted something to bring to the VCs that would summarize our SEO health across multiple web properties in a clean and concise summary. I told him SEO was too complicated for that, but he pushed me and together we came up with the SEO Scorecard.

The scorecard works on a five point rating scale and assesses the website’s key pages in columns against a hearty list of categorized SEO factors in rows. Don’t go overboard when selecting your key pages. I’ve never had to go over five even on the largest of websites. Once you dig in to a website you will usually find that 90% of the content is represented by a handful of templates. The SEO Scorecard is built and populated in Excel, then pulled into your audit document in screen shots.

I always feature the SEO Scorecard near the beginning of the document. It is an excellent way to anchor the rest of the report and gives you something to reference as you describe enhancements. I’m including a screen shot of the first bit of my current SEO Scorecard so you can visualize what I’m talking about.

2. Internal Linking

I’m not talking about the SEO factor here; I’m referring to how link within your SEO Audit Word document. If your reports are anything like the ones I’ve worked on, they end up huge in terms of length and file size. This is especially true if you are good at including screen shots and other graphic elements. Help your readers navigate the document with a click-able table of contents and plenty of embedded links between related sections and topics. Your readers will get more out of the document and will be able to navigate it in a way that makes the most sense to their learning style. This internal linking process might add an hour to the final editing process, but your clients will thank you. Believe me.

Here is a screen shot from the Most Pressing & Valuable Changes section of an audit.

3. Action Items

One of these days, I’ll share the outline that I use in creating an SEO Review document. For now, you can imagine a series of headings and subheadings along with a whole lot of text and a sprinkling of screen shots. For the average Joe, an SEO Review is a brute of a document to read. The concepts are foreign and as they read they’re mind is spinning with ideas of how they will implement the grand ideas you’ve presented. Don’t burden your readers with the additional task of creating a to-do list as they read. After you’ve elaborated on the details of an issue and how it should be resolved, include a list of action items. These are meant as a brief summary, so keep them short and concise!

Here is a sample of action items that followed the Local Search section of a recent report I created.

4. Repetition

As much as you like to think that your clients will read your entire review document over and over with bated breath, they won’t. More likely, your clients will skim the document looking for the most important issues and action items.

At SEOmoz, we not only covered key issues in the SEO Scorecard and in written detail within a dedicated section. We covered the most important components in one form or another a total of SIX times; Overview, Table of Contents, Scorecard, Most Pressing & Valuable Changes section, the topic section (most complete), the Action Items, and the document’s Closing Summary. I’m not suggesting that you copy and paste your entire assessment six times, but what I am suggesting is that you mention key enhancements often and place internal links to the complete assessment within the document’s dedicated section.

Tell ‘em what your gunna tell ‘em (Overview).

Tell ‘em some details about the most important things your gunna tell ‘em (Most Pressing & Valuable Changes).

Tell ‘em where to find the info (Table of Contents, Internal Links).

Tell ‘em just how bad it is on a scale of 1-5 (SEO Scorecard).

Tell ‘em (the topic section).

Tell ‘em what you told ‘em (Closing Summary).

I’ve been writing audits for a long time and will say that it has become one of my favorite tasks as an SEO. It wasn’t always that way. In the beginning it takes countless hours to get your groove and find your efficiencies. I hope that I’ve shared a few ideas here today that will improve your experience writing SEO Audits moving forward.

Keep your eyes out for more posts on the topic of SEO audits over the coming months. I plan to publish something every two weeks until I run out of interesting things to say. Topic suggestions are welcome.
